Facts and Questions about Radon Mitigation and Radon Reduction Systems in Northeast Ohio

What is Radon Gas?

Radon is a radioactive gas that occurs naturally in the environment by seeping out of rocks and soil. Radon comes from the depletion of uranium that has been in the ground since Earth's formation. Radon flows from the soil into outdoor air and into the air in homes and commercial buildings from the movement of gases in the soil beneath the structure. Outside air typically contains extremely low levels of radon, but it builds up in larger concentrations inside a building when the gas is unable to disperse Unlike better-known home hazards like asbestos and lead-based paint, many people are unaware of the danger of household radon exposure because the gas is odorless, tasteless and colorless. We specialize in radon reduction system installations that will take care of your radon problem quickly and painlessly. Just give us a call for more information. Call us even if you just have questions. We are always here to help!

Sub Slab Radon Remediation Depressurization:

Reducing your family's exposure to radon gas is our primary goal. Our systems are up to 99% effective in reducing indoor radon levels. Since radon gas comes from the ground, we use a suction in the ground to remediate it. The process involves creating mild suction/vacuum in the soil underneath the home to collect the radon gas before it enters the home. This process is called "Sub Slab Depressurization", or "Under Slab Suction". This process is basically the same from house to house. Certain details about the house will dictate how the system is installed.

External Radon Mitigation System Piping:

The suction pipe is routed from the basement to the outside of the home at ground level through the rim joist.  There is a fan located on the opposition side of the rim joist and will function 24/7 to remove the radon gases from the structure. The pipe then extends the height of the home and 24 inches above the roof line.  It is designed for radon mitigation and suitable to mount outdoors. The fan is mounted to the pipe with flexible rubber couplings to help eliminate vibrations and to make it easier to service. On new Radon Mitigation Installations we always use "white" couplings (not black) for a better appearance and white clamps to secure the piping to the structure.

Internal Radon Mitigation Piping:

An internal radon mitigation involves routing the pipe from the basement through the roof of the structure. In most cases the fan is either located in the garage or the attic of the home. Much like an external radon remediation, the fan will run 24/7 to remove the rad gases.  Due the fact there are long pipe runs and more bends, there could be condensation that builds in the piping. We always caution our clients about this. To ensure there are proper angles and pitches we design a specific plan for your property.  With both external and internal radon mitigation systems we always use schedule 40 PVC as this helps to decrease any noices from the system and will last longer than schedule 20 PVC.

Radon Mitigation System Benefits

Besides reducing the risk of lung cancer, radon remediation offers many additional benefits:

Drier Air

Fan-based radon mitigation systems can filter out the moist air from the soil beneath your home. An active system can pull as much as a half-gallon of water per hour from beneath a slab foundation or basement.

Environmental Impact

Less humidity can mean decreased dehumidifier usage, if you need a dehumidifier at all. In addition, HVAC systems also run less frequently. Decreased demand for energy-hungry air conditioning systems translates to a lower electric bill and an added benefit for the environment—fewer emissions.

Increased Home Values

Radon mitigation system help increase home salabilty. It also eliminates protracted negotiations over who pays for the installation when a house is on the market. Our services include testing and mitigation system installation. Our certified professionals can help you find the right solution for your home. Contact us for a quote.

Better Health

Lower humidity has added health benefits in the form of fresher interior air and the elimination of musty smells. Decreased humidity means reduced or dampened antagonisms in the form of bacterial growth, mildew, and dust that can aggravate asthma, allergies, and other lung conditions.

Reduction In Cost

Radon mitigation systems that are part of new home design and construction are easier, and therefore cheaper, to install. By design, they usually require less materiel, also making them cheaper. Interior piping is easier to hide within closets and chases.

Cosmetic

An attic fan is less conspicuous and more inaccessible than suction and exhaust pipes. Attic installations are protected from weather, extending the life of the system. The location moves exhaust vents away from doors and windows, making it less likely radon will re-enter the home. It can also buffer system noise.
